Guiliani Changes Direction
It Appears Likely A 2010 Senate Run Is In The Future
Former New York City mayor Rudy Guliani has changed courses. He has decided against a run for governor of New York, according to the New York Times. The decision is a blow to Republican leaders, who saw him as a strong candidate in a race with a deeply unpopular Democratic governor.
"It was not clear what prompted the decision, but the prospect of potentially facing Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo, who is quietly planning his own run for governor, may not have appealed to Mr. Giuliani, who suffered a bruising defeat in the 2008 Republican presidential primary," the Times reports. "While many political analysts believe Mr. Giuliani would have comfortably beaten Gov. David A. Paterson, he would likely have faced an uphill battle against Mr. Cuomo, one of the most popular politicians in the state."
It seems likely that the decision not to run for Governor is because as one source has said Giuliani is prepared to run for U.S. Senate against Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand in 2010 to fill out the remaining two years of Hillary Clinton's Senate seat.
Right now the only declared candidate is little known Republican Rick Lazio, a former Long Island Rep.
Guiliani has not publicly acknowledged his decision to run and a spokesperson said "Rudy has a history of making up his own mind and has no problem speaking it," she said. "When Mayor Giuliani makes a decision about serving in public office, he will inform New Yorkers on his own."
A source close to Guiliani said that running for Governor made no sense to him. He questioned wether he could get things done in the known circus of the NY State Senate with Democratic Assembly Speaker Shelly Silver as ring leader. Rudy felt he could not be effective in such an arena.
People are already speculating wether a successful bid for the Senate will lead to a Presidential run in the future.
A run for the Senate will be a change of lifestyle for Guiliani who has taken to the speaking circuit and has been raking in money from speaking engagements in addition to his very successful law firm.
It is speculated that Rudy Guiliani will make it known soon his plans.
So we wait and we add Rudy to the list, along with Sarah Palin and see what else the Republican party might have up their sleeve for 2010.
